Clinical study of the thyroid diseases

Abstract
The clinical and statistic study of thyroid diseases, visited during the 10 years period from Jan, 1955 to Dec, 1964 for the department of surgery, Chonnam University Hospital is reported.
Of 330 patients, 144 cases(43.6%) had nontoxic nodular goiter, 55 cases (16.7%) toxic diffuse goiter, 45 cases(13.7%) nontoxic diffuse goiter and 16 cases (4.8%) toxic nodular goiter.
There were 70 (21, 2%) with malignant, or benign tumor or thyroiditis.
The sex distribution was 291 female and 39 male, making a female to male ratio of 7.5 : 1.
It was noted that egg-sized enlarged thyroid has been known by 175 cases of all thyroid cases and duration of presenting symptoms was usually one to 3 years,
Most frequent presenting symptoms in nontoxic goiter were mechanical compression by enlarged thyroid mass against adjacent tissue or organ, on the contrary, functional disturbances of thyroid gland in toxic goiter.
Pulse rate, B,M,R, was found to be superior for diagnosis of hyperthyroidism but questionable in accuracy.
I^(131) uptake study was done on 24, 8% of all cases with various thyroid diseases and it was found very significant for diagnosis of hyperthyroidism.
Surgical treatment of thyroid diseases, especially hyperthyroidism, is recommendable after preoperative preparation in most cases in Korea.
